April 1PublicationAutomation in Construction
Congrats to Dr. Dani Paulino on the publication of our new paper, co-authored with Corentin Fivet, Rebecca Napolitano, and me, “Integrating Spatial and Structural Considerations in Floor Plan Transformations of Historic Masonry Buildings,” published in Automation in Construction. Please check out the abstract below and the full paper here.Abstract: Adaptive reuse of historic masonry buildings offers potential to convert vacant structures into multi-family housing while preserving cultural heritage and reducing construction and demolition (C&D) impacts. However, how can spatial reconfiguration and structural stability be computationally coordinated to support early-stage adaptive reuse decisions? This paper introduces a-ARCH, a computational framework that integrates an interactive spatial layout tool for apartment allocation, daylight, and circulation with a multi-objective structural optimization minimizing static eccentricity and C&D costs. The framework is evaluated through sequential and parallel workflows that either couple structural optimization to a spatial solution or compare independently generated spatial and structural alternatives. Results show that comparable structural performance can emerge from different intervention strategies, revealing trade-offs between coordination and design exploration. These findings support architects and structural engineers in performance-informed reuse and motivate future extensions towards broader typologies and sustainability-driven integration.

October 24PublicationFormal Methods in Architecture

My latest publication, “Kahn’s Two Houses: From Formal Analysis to Design Synthesis,” is out! Published in the proceedings of the 2024 Formal Methods in Architecture Symposium in Porto, Portugal, the paper revisits Louis Kahn’s DeVore and Adler houses. Kahn described the houses as “growing out of the same order,” and the paper explores how an implemented shape grammar enlivens this description by generating additional variations, exploring their logic, and relating this relationship between form and order to additional designs in Kahn’s corpus. Please check out the full paper here.

September 27PresentationACSA Intersections Research Conference //AI Design Practices

Delighted to present my paper, “Shape Computation: A Foundation for AI-Embedded Architectural Design Education,” in a lively and fascinating session on “New Foundations” moderated by Eli Keller at the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Intersections Research Conference on AI Design Practices.

Abstract: Given the shifting technological landscape
in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry, how should
architectural education evolve? What skill sets are needed to navigate the
uncertainties and demystify the promises of artificial intelligence (AI) in future
design practices in the field? This paper argues for the value of formal systems
in architectural education at the undergraduate level to prime students for
developing design thinking and computational thinking in parallel. More
precisely, the argument contends that the shape grammar formalism and its
definition of design as a visual calculation provide a powerful and intuitive
introduction to computational design to facilitate adaptation toward evolving practices
in architecture. More specifically, this pedagogical research outlines a three-semester sequence that elaborates
this potential by foregrounding three key elements of shape computation: the
rule, the schema, and the design machine.

May 12Dani’s Dissertation DefensePenn State

Incredibly proud of DR. DANIELE MELO SANTOS PAULINO, who defended her dissertation, Automating the Adaptation of Historic Masonry Buildings for Social Housing, co-advised by Dr. Rebecca Napolitano and me, today! Congratulations to Dani, Becca, and the rest of the advising committee - Dr. Thomas Boothby, Dr. Jose Duarte, Dr. Nathan Brown, and Dr. Corentin Fivet. I’m especially impressed by Dani’s work on an implemented shape grammar for developing spatial layout solutions in existing buildings and how it contributes to the larger computational framework she developed that integrates shape grammars, genetic algorithms, and a brilliant similarity/penalty matrix that analyzes the design space to select design solutions that optimize spatial and structural strategies in adaptive reuse.

Abstract: In response to global housing demand and the environmental burden of new construction, adaptive reuse offers a sustainable alternative by conserving embodied energy, minimizing construction and demolition (C&D) waste, and preserving historic urban fabric. However, transforming vacant historic buildings into social housing poses challenges due to architectural constraints, deterioration, and the need to satisfy both spatial and structural requirements. To address these challenges, this work introduces a hybrid methodology that decouples and later synthesizes spatial and structural layout strategies. The process begins by analyzing existing building elements—such as façade openings and structural walls—to define a grid-based design space that guides both apartment allocation and structural modifications. Two strategies are developed: a spatial-first approach that generates feasible apartment layouts based on daylight access and area requirements, and a structural-first approach that uses evolutionary optimization to reinforce the structural system while minimizing unnecessary interventions. Each strategy produces design alternatives, which are evaluated according to spatial efficiency, preservation of existing elements, C&D cost, and structural performance. A similarity matrix analysis is then applied to compare the spatial and structural candidates, enabling the identification of compatible design pairs that balance architectural and engineering goals without imposing strict hierarchies between disciplines. The framework is implemented through a custom Python tool and validated using case studies in the Historic Center of São Luís, Brazil—a UNESCO World Heritage Site characterized by typological regularity and underutilized housing stock. By supporting early-stage decision-making and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration, this research contributes to the fields of architectural engineering, computational design, and historic preservation. It advocates for sustainable development through the reuse of existing buildings, offering a scalable method for inclusive urban regeneration in heritage contexts.

May 2PresentationSociety of Architectural Historians 78th International Meeting

Presented my paper, The Architect as Developer and Urban Influencer, at SAH 2025 in “The Publicity Spectrum: The Production of Fame and Work in Architecture” session, chaired by Kevin Block and Eva Hagberg.
Abstract:

Jonathan Barnett was a professional urban designer and associate editor at Architectural Record when he met John Portman in 1964. Their meeting occurred while Barnett was in Atlanta searching for new publication material. This initial interaction led to Architectural Record’s January 1966 article by Barnett, “John Portman: Atlanta’s One-Man Urban Renewal Program.” A decade later, the pair co-authored The Architect as Developer (1976), which argues for an integrated design-development process where architectural design and real estate development are mutually informed to produce an architecture beneficial for the public and the investor. The influence of Portman’s practice has yet to be assessed critically to understand how Barnett’s initial publication in Architectural Record and further contributions in their co-authored book refined Portman’s architect-developer model and established connections to national platforms that resulted in exponential opportunity, hype, and, ultimately, influence.

This research focuses on the relationship between Barnett and Portman to probe how their collaboration refreshed and extended Portman’s practice. The paper is developed in three main parts: the first introduces and analyzes their work together on The Architect as Developer (Portman and Barnett 1976); the second presents a 2024 interview with Jonathan Barnett that reflects on their relationship; the third and final proposes how their partnership and the notion of the architect-developer enabled a paradigm shift toward speculative, self-driven practice. This model extended influence by controlling both investment and design to propose entrepreneurship as an alternative mode of architectural production.

May 1-3Walking ToursSociety of Architectural Historians 78th International Meeting

Had a blast leading a walking tour, “Bridge-by-Bridge: Portman’s Labyrinth at Peachtree Center” at SAH 2025 in Atlanta, three times! Thank you to the sixty participants, including some familiar faces, who joined me for your conversation and questions ... and to local organizers Christina Crawford and Elisa Dainese for the invitation.Abstract: This walking tour will navigate
John Portman’s longest, more than fifty-year project at Peachtree Center, a
labyrinth of connected projects, including the 1961 Atlanta Merchandise Mart,
the 1967 Atlanta Hyatt Regency, the 1985 Marriott Marquis, the 2015 Hotel
Indigo, and more. Our route will prioritize the atria as well as the expanding
threads, corridors, and sky bridges that connect city blocks and buildings to
foreground the interiority and spatial speculations of Portman’s cosmos. This
path offers views and connections among the works best experienced within the
orchestrated maze.

February 27Coffee ColloquiumFAU Center for Body, Mind, and Culture

It was a pleasure to present work-in-progress entitled, “Enlivening the History and Logic of Architecture with Rule-Based Improvisation,” at the FAU Center for Body, Mind, and Culture Spring 2025 Coffee Colloquium - thank you to Dr. Richard Shusterman and Dr. Ken Holloway for the invitation and for the excellent discussion!
Abstract: Criticism and creation are at the heart of the architectural discipline. Still, the equal treatment of these two modes in describing, interpreting, and generating designs is not intuitive. By defining the act of design as a visual calculation rooted in geometric and spatial relations, the shape grammar formalism offers a striking way forward – one that relies on the same generous premises as comedic improvisation and its main tenet, “yes, and.” This type of improvisation is powerful in its capacity to agree with any interpretation and to build on it to produce shared meaning in an evolving stepwise interchange. Subsequently, the ability to improvise with algorithmic rules and visual computations allows the analysis/criticism of designs to feedback into the synthesis/construction of new designs to relate past histories with speculative futures that enliven architectural thinking and theory-making. These feedback loops are fundamental to the foundations curriculum at FAU School of Architecture: research and related student work will be shown to introduce this algorithmic approach and to illustrate how it empowers fresh insight into the history and logic of architecture.

July 19PublicationJournal of Building Engineering

How can a series of formal methods be developed into a complementary workflow to accelerate the adaptive reuse of historic buildings toward regenerative design? What methods best support spatial reconfiguration vs. structural modification, for example, and how might they be integrated? More specifically, how can modifications to the structural wall layout in historic masonry buildings be efficiently determined while allowing for the consideration of various spatial reconfigurations?Dani Paulino, Rebecca Napolitano, and I are motivated by these questions in our latest research, “On Determining Structural Wall Layout During the Adaptive Reuse Process of Historic Masonry Buildings,” published in the Journal of Building Engineering. The paper presents a computational strategy based on genetic algorithms to explore and optimize structural modification while offering designers flexibility in spatial arrangement. Since existing buildings are subject to damage, the optimization considers a multi-objective function targeting minimizing the presence of damaged elements and maximizing the presence of undamaged elements in the design, in addition to minimizing the buildings eccentricity, subject to structural constraints. The work is led by Dani Paulino as part of her doctoral thesis in Architectural Engineering at Penn State. Please check out the full paper here.

How can Sebastien Truchet’s visual treatment of combinatorics, characterized by the truchet tile, be formalized computationally to define a generative system for crafting geometric tiles and patterns? Once defined two-dimensionally, how might these geometries be further specified three-dimensionally to provide a design framework for tiling patterns with depth?
Natalie Walter, Benay Gursoy, and I engage these questions in our article, “The Truchet Tile Grammar,” published in the Nexus Network Journal. The paper extends our initial work presented at the Nexus 2023 Conference in Turin, which was developed as part of Natalie Walter’s MS thesis (advised by Benay) and my shape grammars course at Penn State. Natalie used truchet tiling to fabricate mycelium-based acoustic panels and explored how a generative system could expand the design space for tile generation with a variety of aesthetic and acoustic properties. April 2PublicationNexus Network Journal

In what ways is Anne Tyng’s notion of “metamorphology,” the study of the transformation of forms, manifest in her design projects where she was the sole architect of record? Tyng advocated for this approach in her pedagogy and research, but what evidence of a metamorphological design narrative is present in Tyng’s architectural practice that might give flesh and bones to her theories? Can a shape grammar synthesize these speculations to visualize Tyng’s transformations and interpret the ongoing potential of Tyng’s arguments in her theoretical and physical work?I work through these questions in my article “The Grammar of Anne Tyng’s Simpler Space Structures,” published in the Nexus Network Journal. The paper extends my initial work on the subject presented at the Nexus 2023 Conference in Turin to interpret a sequence of three of Tyng’s residential projects. This analysis is framed through the lens of the octetruss to examine the evolution of Tyng’s design approach where the interplay between Platonic geometries and their transformations demonstrates exponential formal and functional opportunity. This analysis provides a foundation for a constructive theory on Tyng’s space structures. The theory is constructive in two directions. First, in that it defines a lattice of spatial relations and their transformations to reconceptualize the houses, and second, in that these same conceptualizations motivate a shape grammar that produces prototypes for space structures rooted in Tyng’s examples. Sample reconfigurations generated with the grammar are offered to support discussion on the value of a metamorphological design approach and how it recalibrates understanding of Tyng’s work to inspire ongoing reinvention. Please check out the full paper here.

Can computational design processes informed by self-build processes in protracted refugee camps (those that become permanent settlements) aid in reframing planning practices to better support the housing of vulnerable populations? More specifically, can shape rules, documenting spatial relations and their change over time, help designers understand the informal transformation process of ten housing units in Irbid Camp in Jordan? How might the formal interpretation of these design moves contribute to the advancement of the design of emergency housing as critical systems that acknowledge the potential for temporary housing to become permanent?Dima Abu-Aridah and I are happy to share the publication of our paper “Shape Grammars and Self-Built Refugee Communities: The Transformation from Tent Shelter to Customized Structure in Irbid Camp” in the SIGraDi Special Issue on Critical Appropriations of the International Journal of Architectural Computing (IJAC). The paper pursues the above questions and develops a parametric shape grammar to formalize self-build transformations of a variety of housing units at Irbid Camp in Jordan to examine how formal systems and related technologies can empower creative planning and participatory design in refugee camps to anticipate adaptation, transformation, and permanence. Read this open-access paper here.

Constructing
Architectural Theory[fall semester]Florida Atlantic UniversitySchool of Architecture
One of the most challenging and important things to learn as an architectural student is how to read
and interpret the language of architecture. This involves understanding conventions of representation
and the design concepts or principles that are not explicitly defined in a design but require close observation and learning to see as an architect. This seeing is a mode of critical thinking that we aim
to develop in this course by working back and forth between modes of analysis (with diagrams) and
modes of synthesis (with shape rules and grammars). The diagram then becomes a mechanism for
reading a precedent, and the rule, or algorithm, becomes a way to rewrite and recalculate
relationships interpreted from existing designs. Together, these equivalent modes allow us to construct
our own theories and narratives in a fundamentally architectural and designerly way: through drawing
and modeling them. This also allows us to develop a foundation for thinking critically about the nature
of calculation and computation in architecture.

Introduction to
Shape Grammars
[fall semester]

Pennsylvania State University
Stuckeman School

Shape grammars are a powerful formalism for the generative description of
designs and a key discourse in design computation. In this course, the theory
of shapes, shape rules, schemata, languages of designs, and more will be
introduced, providing students with a foundation in the rule-based
specification of designs. Critical and creative applications in the arts,
architecture, landscape, urbanism, product design, and engineering will be
discussed to understand shape grammars as a visual approach to design computation with broad potential for design and research. Through weekly
readings and in-class discussions, workshop assignments, and an individual
project, we will develop an introductory understanding of the theoretical
foundations of shape grammars.

Programming for Artists and Designers
aka
Design Scripting
[spring semester]Pennsylvania State UniversityStuckeman School

This course introduces fundamentals of computer programming in Python
Rhinoscript, which offers the advantage of using geometric and visual examples
to write programs that generate designs. The main objective is to learn and use
a programming language to explore the creative power of code as a medium.
Python’s readable syntax makes it ideal for beginners and adaptable for those
interested in developing coding skills in other programming languages. The basic constructs of programming are taught to develop scripts for
design iteration, generation, analysis and evolution. In parallel, the course
will present various paradigms for computation in design including parametric
design, procedural modeling, and rule-based design. The practical part of the course includes a series of biweekly exercises,
as well as a project to create a tool to solve a design problem. The project
may address different scales, including art, architecture, engineering,
landscape, product, or graphic design.

Remix RowhouseDirected Research Studio[spring 2023]Pennsylvania State UniversityStuckeman School
Remix Rowhouse (a vertical, fourth and fifth-year undergraduate design studio) focused on engaging the logic of housing
typologies and their urban implications toward regenerative design proposals
for the refabrication of an existing block of row houses in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania. A primary basis of the studio was a motivation to learn to think
computationally to develop resourceful affordable housing models through the
imaginative transformation of building stock in lieu of demolition, while a
secondary interest was to investigate how a framework of analysis-synthesis
feedback loops would reinforce a move from linear to circular design processes
in the studio.

The second-year design studio sequence culminates with the NCMA competition (National Concrete Masonry Association). The program is typically conceived to be medium in scale, sited in a dense urban environment, and conducive to the use of concrete masonry units as a primary material. The NCMA grant generously funds the project and prize money for winning students.

The second-year design studio introduces students to diverse design issues such as program, site, context, circulation, accessibility, facade design, materiality, life safety, structural systems, and sustainability in the design and making of architecture. Precedent analysis will constitute a critical component of this process. Particular attention is given to the development of appropriate and meaningful architectural concepts, spatial composition, architectonics (choice of, and connections between materials) and the introduction of technological/structural considerations at the inception of the design process.

The 2020
Portman Prize Studio,

Re-Source: Architectural Experiments in Radical Re-Use
and Regenerative Buildings, explores regenerative building, an approach to the conception, design development,
and technical specification of architecture that seeks to radically reduce its
consumption of raw material and non-renewable energy resources throughout the
building lifecycle and reshape design practice to ameliorate the current
degradation of global environmental health. The main vision for this graduate studio was led by Portman Visiting Critic Alan Organschi.
My section, ALT/ALT,

specifically
speculates on how an alternative, multi-generational neighborhood (considering
everyone from kids to seniors) can be activated in our current decomposition
and recomposition of the site – as well as how our practice can make long-term,
positive impacts that can inspire future cycles of redevelopment. The program
considers how the arts community, installations, performances, and pop-up
events have stimulated recent interest in South Downtwon, Atlanta - particularly on South Broad
- and the studio will strategize how to develop and sustain a neighborhood for on-going
creative revitalization.

	Voices in Design Computing is
a podcast series featuring conversations with designers who are redefining the
relations between design and computing within and across creative disciplines. The series emphasizes dialogue as a medium for developing
perspectives on how designers can grapple with computational thinking and
technologies in their work to open up a generous culture of design possibility. Through questions that aim to unpack what design
computing is and what it can be, interviews with researchers, educators, and
practitioners from diverse backgrounds discuss the transformative potentials of
the field as well as the open and creative pathways that are ripe
for exploration.

Episode 001 ///Felecia Davis
Felecia Davis’ work in computational textiles questions how we live and she re-imagines how we might use textiles in our daily lives and in architecture. Davis is interested in developing computational methods and design in relation to specific bodies in specific places engaging specific social, cultural and political constructions. Davis is an Associate Professor at the Stuckeman Center for Design Computing in the School of Architecture at Pennsylvania State University and is the director of SOFTLAB@PSU. She completed her PhD in Design Computation at MIT. Davis’ work in architecture connects art, science, engineering and design and was featured by PBS in the Women in Science Profiles series. Davis’ work was part of the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition Reconstruction: Blackness and Architecture in America. She is a founding member of the Black Reconstruction Collective a not-for-profit group of Black architects, scholars and artists supporting design work about the Black diaspora. Davis is also principal in her own design firm, FELECIADAVISTUDIO where the firm has received several finalist awards for her architectural designs in open and invited design competitions. LISTEN HERE

Episode 002 ///
Karla Saldaña Ochoa
Karla Saldaña Ochoa is an Ecuadorian architect with a Master of Advanced Studies in Landscape Architecture from ETH Zurich. In June 2021, she finished her Ph.D. at ETH Zurich, which investigated the integration of Artificial and Human Intelligence to have a precise and agile response to natural disasters. Since August 2021, Karla is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Florida; her teaching and research focus on investigating the interplay of Artificial and Human Intelligence in architectural practices at building and urban scale. Karla is the leading researcher at SHARE Lab, a research group focused on developing human-centered AI projects on design practices. The acronym SHARE stands for Spatial Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Research & Experimentation. The research of the lab focuses on the relationship between human and artificial intelligence, knowing that one complements the other, with AI being able to augment human physical and intellectual capabilities. SHARE Lab work aims to address the following question: how architects might include such technologies in a design workflow while preserving their role as a creative entity? LISTEN HERE

Episode 003 ///Huiwon Lim
Huiwon Lim is an assistant professor of graphic design at Penn State. He previously served as a lecturer at Iowa State University, which is where he earned his M.F.A. in Graphic Design, a graduate certificate in human-computer interaction, and a master’s degree in environmental graphic design. Lim’s interests lie in visual communications, environmental graphic design, brand experience, human-computer interaction, user experience design, visualizing information, and exhibition design.

During his time in Ames, Iowa, Lim taught undergraduate courses in graphic design, core design, and interdisciplinary design. He was also named a recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award in 2017. As a student, he won the Best of Category, Environmental Graphic Design Award at the 58th Annual Art Director’s Association of Iowa Design Exhibition in 2016. Lim is a member of AIGA and the Society for Experiential Graphic Design.

A native of Gunsan, Korea, Lim has a bachelor’s degree in art and engineering from the Handong Global University in Pohang, Korea LISTEN HERE

Episode 004 ///Shelby Doyle
Shelby Doyle is an associate professor of architecture and Stan G. Thurston Professor of Design Build, co-founder of the Computation & Construction Lab (CCL), and director of the Architectural Robotics Lab (ARL) at the Iowa State University College of Design. The CCL and ARL are the result of Doyle’s Presidential Impact Hire at Iowa State to rethink digital fabrication and design-build. The CCL works to connect developments in computation to the challenges of construction through teaching, research, and outreach.

The central hypothesis of CCL and Doyle’s work is that computation in architecture is a material, pedagogical, and social project; computation is both informed by and productive of architectural cultures. This hypothesis is explored through the fabrication of built projects and materialized in computational practices. The CCL is invested in questioning the role of education and pedagogy in replicating existing technological inequities, and in pursuing the potential for technology in architecture as a space of, and for, gender equity. LISTEN HEREEpisode 005 ///Derek Ham
Derek Ham has taught design in a variety of contexts: architecture, graphic design, industrial design, computer animation, game design, and more. In each of these disciplines, Ham introduces play as an informal learning method to teach design. For Ham, play is an algorithmic framework for teaching creativity in design – one that has a foundation in shape grammars and allows us to think of designs as the outcomes of playful calculation. Ham is currently the department head of art and design, associate professor of graphic design and affiliated assistant research professor of architecture at North Carolina State University. In addition, he founded Logic Grip, an NC State official startup spun out of the College of Design’s Mixed Reality Lab (MxRLab). Before joining the faculty of the College of Design at NC State, he taught at the MIT School of Architecture, Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, and the Rhode Island School of Design.

Ham’s research interests span the areas of game-based learning, algorithmic thinking, and digital fabrication/making. In his current work, he investigates both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality technology to find ways these tools can expand the possibilities of interaction design toward new forms of storytelling and scholarship. In 2017, Ham began creating an immersive VR experience of the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Worker’s Strike during the Civil Rights Movement. The I Am A Man VR Experience was released in 2018 (the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination), allowing a first-hand experience of a pivotal moment in American history. The project was funded by Oculus and earned numerous film festival awards. A second project, Barnstormers: Determined to Win, is a forthcoming interactive VR experience of historical fiction providing an interactive narrative of the stories of players in the Negro Baseball League, such as Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Buck O’Neil. LISTEN HERE

Startup Culture
[2020-2021]

The Design Business Startup Culture (DBSC) podcast features student-led interviews recorded and produced by MArch students from the Georgia Tech School of Architecture during the Summer 2020 semester. These episodes are the outcome of the ARCH 6316 Professional Practice course taught by Michael Gamble and Heather Ligler. The podcast was the primary medium for learning in the course and aimed to take advantage of the remote teaching environment to connect with practitioners.

The focus of the DBSC podcast is action – how to create and
sustain a small design business. Our goal is to instill a sense of entrepreneurship, ambition
and inventiveness that can proactively address the challenges of
the profession, especially the current issues of health and justice, with the
hopes that new practices will emerge - enjoy listening.
